Vitae Sanguis & Vitas (in progress)
OOC: The setting is meant to be a reflection of 'mon' style roleplaying games, in which people control monsters for the purpose of battle. The system is a little too complex to be by a videogame, but that is the general feeling aimed for.
Overview:
The mysterious liquid Vitae Sanguis has no known origin. As far as anyone can tell, it emerges from the depths of the Earth in either pools that remain for a short time or in explosive geysers. This occurs more commonly in some areas than others, but no geographic link has been found between these places. It simply happens, and despite extensive research, the reason has never been found.
Its effects and composition are much better understood, although the process that cause the results are less so. When properly exposed to Vitae Sanguis inorganic matter is transformed into complex life, organisms are mutated into more powerful forms, and a fusion of organisms can occur. The creatures created by this process are called Vitas.
Vitas possess incredible abilities that are a reflection of their original forms and often defy the common understandings of physics. No two Vitas will ever be completely identical, because the history and attributes of no two objects or organisms are identical. The forms and powers of the Vitas are as much influenced by the history of the original as they are its physical qualities. The concept behind psychometry is essentially true here. Every object, living or not, contains a history of its existence and a sense of its purpose in the form of energy ingrained into it. The Vitas transformation uses this energy.
This means that original forms that have strong histories produce more unique and powerful Vitas. Vitas can also retain the relationship they had with others before their transformation, with many people's strongest Vitas being an item or animal that they have relied upon and taken care of, forging a strong attachment. Legendary items attached to outstanding achievements or used by skilled practitioners are often sought after—for example, the cookware of high-class chefs or the objects of historical figures. Conversely, items crafted of animals bred explicitly to be transformed become irreversibly inert, as they have fulfilled their purpose.
For the majority of history, the only Vitas were Wild Vitas. Animals or natural materials animated or mutated by the emergent Vitae Sanguis. As they cannot reproduce but do not age, they provided a great danger but did not completely destroy the environment. Wild Vitas are untameable and violent.
Later, it was discovered that a small number of humans (and other animals, although they are rarely intelligent enough to take advantage of it) possessed the ability to influence the Vitas transformation and control those they created once this was done. These people were named many things, but the common term for them is Naturals. Naturals became fundamentally crucial to preserving humanity.
As science progressed, artificial Vitae Sanguis was created named LifeBlood. Unlike Vitae Sanguis that required an affinity only possessed by Naturals; LifeBlood could be controlled by anyone with the right equipment, without the painstaking training needed for a Natural. Artificial Vitas were made readily available to all.
Regardless of if it is natural or artificial, controlling a Vitas requires a Control Device. This is a specially prepared piece of equipment that can store a Vitas Core, a vital part of them that can exist outside of their body. Naturals use a wide variety of items that they must make themselves and can match their needs. Artificial Control Devices are mass-produced as gloves of gauntlets, but custom ones are not uncommon. Without a Control Device, a Vitas will eventually become wild and will not follow orders.
